Storing Your Classic Car: 10 Wash and Detail Tips

Preparing Your Classic for Long-Term Storage

When storing your classic car for an extended period, it's crucial to prepare it properly to maintain its condition. Here are ten essential wash and detail tips to ensure your car remains protected and pristine during storage:

1. Thoroughly Wash and Clean

Begin by thoroughly washing and cleaning your classic car, removing all dirt, grime, and road salt. Use a mild car wash soap and a soft sponge or wash mitt. Pay attention to hard-to-reach areas like wheel wells, undercarriage, and panel seams.

2. Apply a Protective Wax or Sealant

After washing, apply a high-quality wax or sealant to protect the paint from moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors. This will help prevent fading, oxidation, and scratches.

3. Clean and Lubricate All Hinges and Locks

To prevent rust and ensure smooth operation, clean and lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches. Use a penetrating oil or lubricant specifically designed for automotive use.

4. Detail the Interior

Vacuum the interior thoroughly, including seats, carpets, and headliner. Use a mild interior cleaner to wipe down all surfaces, paying attention to areas that tend to accumulate dust and dirt.

5. Protect Leather Surfaces

If your car has leather seats or upholstery, use a leather cleaner and conditioner to protect them from drying out or cracking. Apply the conditioner sparingly and allow it to absorb fully.

6. Disconnect the Battery Terminals

To prevent battery drain, disconnect the battery terminals. Use corrosion-resistant terminals and apply dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.

7. Fill the Fuel Tank

Fill the fuel tank to capacity to prevent condensation from forming inside the tank. Add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from going stale during storage.

8. Cover the Car

Use a high-quality car cover designed for long-term storage. The cover should be breathable to allow moisture to escape, but water-resistant to protect from rain and snow.

9. Place Wheel Blocks

Position wheel blocks behind the wheels to prevent the car from rolling during storage. Ensure the blocks are securely placed and stable.

10. Check Regularly

Check on your stored classic car periodically, especially during extended periods. Inspect the car for any signs of moisture, rodent activity, or other issues that may require attention.
